Is Coffee Gluten Free?

Coffee is one of those universally enjoyed drinks that can bring people together in a way nothing else can. Whether you’re enjoying a hot cup of java or a cold brew, it’s easy to see why this drink is so beloved. But when it comes to dietary restrictions, it can be a bit confusing to know if coffee is gluten and dairy free.

The answer is relatively simple: yes, plain coffee is naturally gluten-free and dairy-free. However, if you’re grabbing a cup of joe from a cafe, you may want to double-check that the creamers, syrups, and other add-ins are also gluten and/or dairy free, depending on your dietary preferences. For example, some dairy-based creamer options such as half-and-half and whole milk contain lactose, which is derived from dairy, and therefore not suitable for those on a dairy-free diet.

The good news is that most cafes have plenty of  gluten and dairy-free options available, from plant-based milks and almond-based creamers to syrups and sweeteners that are free from these ingredients. As long as you’re paying attention to the ingredients and keeping an eye out for any labels that could indicate possible allergen cross-contamination, it’s easy to enjoy a cup of coffee that’s gluten and dairy free.

So, the bottom line is that coffee itself is definitely gluten and dairy free. Just be sure to double-check the additives you add to your coffee, and you can feel confident knowing you’re sipping a delicious cup without worry. Enjoy!
