Ideal coffee brewing isn’t always available. However, if you really want to try to make the best cup of coffee each morning, then here are a few tips that you can use.
- Right Grind: finer grind means more bean surface area exposed to water; for longer brew methods (i.e., French Press) coarser grind is necessary; an even grind of any size is ideal.
- Fresh, clean water: if the water doesn’t taste good, the coffee won’t either.
- Don’t let it sit: coffee is freshest for about 10 minutes after brewing; transfer to a thermal carafe to avoid overcooking and over-extraction.
- ”Golden Ratio”: 1-2 Tbsp. ground coffee for every 6 oz of water.
- Watch the time: with drip system, contact time should be approx. 5 minutes; French Press: 2-4 minutes; for espresso, coffee is in contact with water for only 20-30 seconds; cold brew should steep overnight (about 12 hours).
- Right Temperature: ideal brewing temp. is 195-205 degrees F; if boiling water separately for French Press or Pour-Over Cone, let water sit a minute to allow temp. to drop.
- Store Properly: keep beans in an airtight container, out of light in a dark cupboard about 50-70 degrees F.
